Mark Lee '85

At Webb, renowned architect Mark Lee ’85 was inspired by art teacher Blair Maffris who always encouraged him to engage in extracurricular projects that would allow him to explore his interests.

Today, Mark is a founder and principal, with his wife Sharon Johnston, of the dynamic architecture firm Johnston Marklee, having worked throughout the US, Europe, and South America. One of his best known designs is the famous “Hill House” built into the hillside in the Pacific Palisades in Southern California. The Los Angeles Times named his firm, Johnston Marklee, one of the two architecture firms to follow in 2013.

Recent projects include the Menil Drawing Institute, the first freestanding American museum dedicated entirely to drawing, which broke ground on March 27, and a new master plan for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. In addition to his architectural practice in Los Angeles, Mark teaches design studios at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Lee received his BA in architecture from USC and earned a Masters in Architecture at the Harvard Design School. In addition to design, Lee has taught at ETH Zurich, a science and technology university, UCLA and was a guest professor at the Technical University Berlin.
